Your sweet tooth will thank you for discovering these 9 bakery shops in Penang!

One of my favourite things about getting up early in the morning is getting first dibs on freshly baked bread and pastries. It’s a task I bring with me whenever I’m visiting new cities, towns and neighbourhoods and one place that surprised me with its selection of bakeries was Penang.

I was pleased to discover Penang’s stores that baked goodies, whether they be pure bakeries or those disguised as cafes. To show just how much I love these spots, I’ve made a list highlighting their best offerings and why I think you should check them out!

So whether you’re on an afternoon stroll or a morning jog, here are some bakery shops in Penang that you may want to stop by!

Continental Bakery

Address: Nagore Square, 33, Jalan Nagor

Contact details: +60 4-228 3814

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Saturday: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Sunday: 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM

Continental Bakery immediately reeks of nostalgia, as it’s more of a traditional no-frills bakery as opposed to the modern cafe-like establishments of today. You’ll immediately be brought back to your childhood when you see its simple exterior and the beautiful buns it has on display.

Furthermore, once you get a whiff of what they have cooking in their ovens, you’re guaranteed to buy at least one or two pastries from their selection. Personally, I love sourcing my sourdough here because they’re so cheap!

However, you can’t go wrong with anything from their menu, whether it be their muffins, wheat bread, cinnamon rolls or anything in between. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something more savoury, you can order their chicken pie!

Pro tip:

While you’re here, be sure to stop by New World Park! It’s a bustling hawker centre that houses over 50 stalls that offer some of Malaysia’s best and most famous street foods.

Black Kettle

If you’re looking for someplace peaceful to spend your afternoons in, then Black Kettle should be on your radar. It features a laid-back atmosphere that can be the perfect ambience for when you want to catch up with your loved ones over some coffee and freshly baked coffee.

As soon as you enter its doors, you’ll know what you’re in for, as they have their pastries on display behind glass counters. From sweet cakes to savoury buns, you’ll find everything your heart may desire even though they’ve removed plenty of their past pastries from their menu.

Speaking of cakes, we highly recommend Bailey’s Cheesecake, as it’s the perfect slice to accompany whatever drink you order from their expert baristas. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something you can bring home, you can opt for their homemade whole loaf or baguette.

Pro tip:

Be sure to explore the neighbourhood before or after visiting this bakery to discover some of Penang’s famous street art! Furthermore, you can check out the famous Wonderfood Museum just down the block from the bakery.

You can easily mistake Mon Delice Patisserie for a fancy French establishment, and we won’t blame you! Aside from its fancy-sounding name, the store itself is Instagrammable, being a renovated traditional shophouse in Penang.

However, you’ll be surprised how cheap they offer everything here, from their freshly baked pastries to their entrees and appetizers.

The main stars of the show here, however, are hands down their homemade cakes. If you know someone who’s celebrating their birthday soon, consider coming here to get them a beautiful and personalised cake.

Pro tip:

If you’re planning on commuting, we recommend taking the bus and dropping off at the Wisma Persekutuan bus station. From there, you only have to walk a couple of blocks to reach the bakery.

As you may have gleaned from its name, Le Petit Four Pâtisserie is the place to be for all things French pastries and cakes. You’ll be greeted by their offerings as soon as you enter its doors, as they’ll be tempting you behind their respective glass cases.

Every pastry from their menu is worth highlighting, but we’re especially fond of their croissants. They feature the perfect flakey outer layer while housing a warm and doughy interior—perfect for an afternoon tea!

Lastly, the place itself is also worth noting, as its cosy and French-inspired interior will transport you to the streets of Paris.

Stop by Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi before or after your time in this bakery! It’s one of the most beautiful and historical museums on the island and it’s a must-visit for first-timers in Penang.

LesGrains Bakery can easily pass as one of the most Instagrammable cafes in Penang because of its elegant interior and cool-looking floor patterns. Looks aside, this bakery should still be on your must-visit spots on the island because of its assortment of freshly baked pastries.

What sets it apart from other bakeries in the area is that all of its offerings are inspired by Japanese cuisine, incorporating unique flavours in your typical pastries. From sesame seed buns to sea salt crusty rolls, the freshly baked goodies featured here are out of the ordinary!

If you’re looking for something cheesy and savoury, however, your best bet is ordering their garlic parmesan cheese bread, which is pure perfection! Pair any of these pastries with their masterfully-brewed drinks and you’re golden!

Pro tip:

If the Japanese offerings in this bakery aren’t enough to satisfy your cravings, then you should cross the street and stop by Kakuriyo Ramen after your afternoon tea here!

La Vie en Rose Pâtisserie is one of the most chic cafes in Malaysia, and it’s not hard to come to this conclusion once you’re greeted by its pink and elegant exterior. This beauty continues inside when you see its cute walls and equally adorable baked goods.

One of their biggest draws is their madeleines, which are small shell-shaped cakes that are dazzled with different types of toppings.

These cute little cakes are just scratching the surface of what you’ll find here, as they also offer ridiculously gigantic pastries like Pan Au Chocolat. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something regular-sized, one of their best offerings is their selection of croissants.

Pro tip:

If you’re looking for something hot that you can pair with one of their sponge cakes, we highly recommend the hot white chocolate matcha.

Nestled in the heart of George Town, Penang is The Maker, a quaint and spacious cafe that houses a plethora of decorated pastries and cakes. Furthermore, they also offer a myriad of beverages that can be enjoyed on their own or as an accompaniment to their baked goods.

Choosing from their selection of baked goodies encased in glass is like being a kid in a candy store. Everything looks colourful and you can’t decide which one to get because all of them look tantalising.

If you find yourself feeling like this on your visit, we recommend sticking with their bestsellers, namely their strawberry custard croissants and cruffins. We love the latter because they are filled with different flavours like pistachio, raspberry and more.

Pro tip:

Walk down the block from this cafe to see two of Penang’s beautiful murals, namely the Ice Cream Rose and the Playful Little Girl.

When it comes to providing cute and delicious slices of cake, Whisk may very well take the cake (see what I did there?). Upon entering, you’ll immediately be whisked away (okay, I’ll stop) by their eye-catching whimsical cakes of different shapes and sizes.

The selection of flavours they offer is quite impressive as well! You can either go for proven and tested slices like blueberry and strawberry cheese or go the opposite direction and try new flavours like matcha and orange cheese.

What’s great about these cakes is that they’re also super pleasing to look at—almost to the point where you don’t want to take a bite out of them. Of course, you should do so, but be sure to take tons of photos first!

Pro tip:

If you’re looking for something sweet and cold during a hot and sunny day, we recommend ordering their mango popsicle!

If you’re looking to visit a historic place where you can also wind down and satisfy your sweet tooth, then ChinaHouse should be on your itinerary! It’s one of the oldest bakeries in Penang but don’t be fooled because it can still stand tall among the newcomers of today.

On their glass counter, you’ll find their wide selection of freshly baked goodies, ranging from cakes to rolls, loaves and everything in between. Plus, they come in interesting flavours like butterscotch, chocolate, caramel and more.

The place itself is worth highlighting as well, as it retains some of that old charm while modernizing its seats and tables. It doesn’t feature any fancy decor, but it’s made more loveable with its sketches and caricatures.

Pro tip:

While you’re here, be sure to visit the neighbouring Magic World Penang! It’s here where you’ll find mind-bending paintings and artworks that you can use to capture quirky and cool photos.
